Biosecurity Alert: Giant African Snails Detected in Shipments at Port Botany

Gava Australia has been informed of the biosecurity holds placed on shipments post-clearance from the TS Guangzhou (v2419S) at Port Botany following the detection of Giant African Snails (GAS).

Biosecurity Risk Alert:

Giant African Snails are among the most destructive pests globally. They can devastate crops, spread pathogens harmful to humans and animals, and quickly establish themselves in favourable environments, posing a severe threat to Australia’s agriculture and environment.

Action Taken:

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), have provided the following update:

  • On Tuesday, 3rd of December, biosecurity holds were applied to containers discharged from the TS Guangzhou.
  • Affected containers have been isolated at Port Botany and require external biosecurity inspections.

Key Reminder:

This situation underscores the importance of vigilance in managing biosecurity risks to protect Australia’s agricultural and environmental integrity.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this with you.
