Shipping Delays from Italy: Due to La Spezia Port Maintenance
We would like to inform you of ongoing disruptions impacting shipments from Italy. Since February 2025, we have encountered delays and changes to vessel schedules for direct services on MSC and CMA CGM vessels. These disruptions are a result of extraordinary maintenance work being carried out by the La Spezia Port Authority at the wharf.
As a result, vessels have been unable to adjust their port call schedules, leading to the diversion of certain containers via Valencia before continuing their journey to Australia as per normal operations. This decision to bypass La Spezia is made solely by the vessel operators and is beyond Gava’s control.
The ongoing expansion and renovation at the La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT) have caused significant delays, impacting both the arrival and departure of containerships.
The Contship Group is advancing the expansion of LSCT’s Molo Ravano terminal to increase handling capacity from 1.4 million TEUs to 2 million TEUs, with the additional goal of boosting rail utilisation to 50% of total throughput. These developments are part of a broader initiative to strengthen La Spezia’s role in global trade.
The maintenance and expansion works are expected to be complete by mid-to-late March.
Gava Australia is committed to keeping you well-informed and will diligently work to mitigate any disruptions to the best of our ability. We will remain vigilant, closely monitoring the situation, and will provide timely updates as new information becomes available.
